In this recipe, i will be using fresh store bought rice cakes/Garaetteok (가래떡 in Korean). In Jakarta it's not easy to find this fresh rice cake, they were only sold in Korean market. I bought this at Mugunghwa Supermarket,Karawaci,Tangerang. They were also sold at Lotte mart supermarkets. It tastes almost like mochi, but has more firm and chewy texture. This tteokbokki tastes spicy and sweet at the same time. It is very nice to eat them while it's still hot, especially in these cold rainy days ^^. Let's check the recipe!
INGREDIENTS:
♥ 200grams rice cake ( sliced diagonally )♥ 1/4 cup red pepper paste / gochujang sauce
♥ 1 tbsp hot pepper flakes
♥ 50grams Fish cake / fish balls
♥ 200ml water
♥ 1tsp honey
♥ 1/4tsp sesame oil
♥ 2tbsp maltose / corn syrup ( helps the sauce to turn thick and shinny )
♥ 1tbsp apple vinegar
♥ 1tsp chicken/beef stock powder
♥ 2 green scallions ( cut them into 2 inches long pieces )
♥ 1 clove of garlic , mashed
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Boil water,chicken/beef stock powder and garlic till it comes to a boil.
- Remove the garlic and add in rice cake, fish cake, red pepper paste, red pepper flakes, honey, sesame oil,maltose/corn syrup, apple vinegar and green scallions into the pot.
- On medium-high heat,Stir till the rice cake turns soft and the sauce has thickens (around 5-10minutes). If you use frozen ones, make sure to have them at room temperature before cooking them. Frozen ones / ones kept in the chiller should take around 10-15minutes for the rice cake to turn soft.
- If the rice cake hasn't turn soft enough, pour some more water, and keep stirring till the rice cake turns soft.
- Serve it while it's hot.
♥ Enjoy & Happy Cooking ♥ ^_^
